Years prior to the inception of the ACVO Vision for Animals Foundation, when the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists was gathering funds in the "Magrane Fund", the Basic Science Course was the first and most consistent significant donors to the VAF. The Foundation and its grant recipients owe a great debt of gratitude to the individual speakers who have chosen to collectively donate their speaker honorariums for 2-3 weeks of work. They can choose to donate their time to both educate ACVO and ECVO residents and primary care veterinarians in veterinary ophthalmology and to financially benefit the VAF.

Since 2002, the bi-annual Basic Science Course speakers have donated more than $125,000 to the Foundation. Prior donations were made in the 1990s. Total donated funds are estimated to be $200-$275,000.
