VAF FUNDRAISERS

BSC Honorarium Donations

Years prior to the inception of the Vision for Animals Foundation, when the ACVO was gathering funds in the "Magrane Fund", the Basic Science Course was the first and most consistent significant donors to the VAF. The Foundation and its grant recipients owe a great debt of gratitude to the individual speakers who have chosen to collectively donate their speaker honorariums for 2-3 weeks of work. They donate their time to both educate ACVO residents and primary care veterinarians in veterinary ophthalmology and to financially benefit the VAF.

Over the past five years the BSC speakers have donated more than $51,000. The BSC is held every other year. Prior donations have been made since the 1990s. Total donated funds are estimated to be $150,000-$200,000. More information about the BSC.

ACVO Diplomate Donations & Pet Letters
Many American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologist (ACVO) Diplomates continue to support the Foundation through either general annual donations and/or the pet letter program. General donations are those of any denomination given at any time annually. The pet letter program consists of a donation to the VAF in the name of a pet that the clinic wishes to honor, sometimes due to expiration of the animal. A letter and Foundation brochure is then mailed to the pet's owner to alert them of the donation. Please contact the VAF office if you would be interested in participating in this program.

Annual Auction Fundraiser
Since 2002, a successful annual VAF fundraiser has been a silent auction held at the ACVO conference. Diplomates of the College, company vendors and guests make both industry item and private donations to be auctioned off. Typically this raises approximately $10,000 annually. If you would like to make a donation please contact the VAF office or bring an item to the annual conference.

Public Donations
The VAF board of directors grant recipients are grateful for the growing support of public donations. These donation have only begun to be solicited in the past couple years, primarily through the web site and through pet letters purchased for them by their veterinary ophthalmologist. To date, public donations account for $41,309.00 over four years. Please help us increase these donations by making a tax deductible donation today via our secure online donation form.

CERF Program Donations
The ACVO membership voted at the Business Meeting in Hawaii to develop a joint collection program with CERF. The proposal involved adding a $1 fee to CERF exams which the Diplomate would collect or pay directly. These dollars would be invested into research which will benefit breeders and all animals in general. If funds are collected, the veterinarian would inform the client where the funds are to go and provide them brochures if he/she wishes. CERF will refund these donations to the Foundation directly. This program has the promise of adding significant funds to the VAF coffers, approximately $80,000-$90,000 annually. We will keep you posted regarding the details of this program.

Educational Grants
The VAF is soliciting donations from endowed Foundations in 2008. There is a possibility to gain significant funding from private foundations that focus on funding medical research. In early 2008 one Foundation, which asked to remain unnamed, donated $20,000 to the VAF. We are hopeful that these types of donations will increase over the coming years.

ACVO Service Dog Eye Exam Event - May 12, 2008
ACVO National Service Dog Eye Exam Day will take place in May 2008. Any possible excess sponsor dollars will be donated to the VAF through the ACVO. Special thanks go out to Merial, makers of HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) and FRONTLINE®, the event's primary sponsor, Pet Health Systems, and ACVO Diplomates for providing free screening eye exams to 5,000-10,000 dogs across the country. This team effort has resulted in a greatly successful program. The eye exam program may take place in future years.
